Gene Eisenbeiss (1926-97), a horticulturist, was employed by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for more than 30 years, 26 of which he spent at the U.S. National Arboretum. He was the international registar of cultivated Ilex (Holly) for more than 20 years. He was involved with the publication of authoritative and comprehensive cultivar checklists (with more than 200 publications on hollies), and was responsible for the introduction of at least 14 cultivars.
